Festive coin: Andreas Kalvos – 150 years in memory
Front side: Born in Zakynthos, Andreas Kalvos (1792-1869) was one of the most important modern Greek poets. Combining a solid neoclassical education with the high ideals of Romanticism and by capitalizing the demotic Greek, he expresses the revolutionary ideas of his time and his personal perspective.
The national side of the coin features a portrait of Andreas Kalvos. On the inner circle, the name “ANDREAS KALVOS 1792-1869” is inscribed on the left, together with the year of minting and a palmette (the mint mark of the Hellenic Mint); on the right is the text “HELLENIC REPUBLIC”. The monogram of the artist (George Stamatopoulos) is also visible. The outer ring of the coin bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
